Lonnie sat up on one elbow, and I hoped he wouldn’t start hitting on me again.
“Nothing’s the matter.”
“Then why you acting like you acting?”
“I just wish we could live different, I guess,” I said.
“Like how?”
“I don’t know. Maybe if we didn’t have that stuff before.”
“What stuff? You mean them watches and
things?”
I nodded.
“Well, let me tell you, sucker.” He got up and came over where I was standing. “When I gave you the money from them watches you sure didn’t give it back. You and Carrie so damn holy you got angel wings growing out your asses! Here!”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a 117
ring. He put it on the table and then he went and laid back down on the bed.
“Now, I’m going to leave that ring right there.
Now since you against me, you can go down to the station house and tell the man to come up here and bust me on a possession rap. Then I can have my head beat and go on to jail and you can run to church and thank God that I ain’t jiving up your life.”
He stayed on the bed and looked at me, and I went on in my room and went to bed. I didn’t take my clothes off in case he started in hitting me or something. I heard him go out and I tried to go to sleep but I couldn’t. I started thinking about Frank again, only we wasn’t ballplayers this time but we just lived together. When I was thinking about Frank I was feeling sorry for myself, and I knew I was, only I didn’t care. I just kept on thinking about Frank and me. I thought maybe I would take another name, too. I would call myself Doc, or the Shadow. Then everywhere me and Frank went we would put our names up—Motown and the
Shadow.
I thought about going out to get some drinks, but I know I couldn’t drink one because my stomach was too upset. Whenever Lonnie started yelling at me my stomach would get upset. Then I 118
couldn’t drink anything that was too sweet. I could probably drink a chocolate drink, I thought, but I really didn’t feel like going outside. I got up and went out to the bathroom. I saw that Lonnie had left some of his drink in the bottle, it was almost half full. I poured a little in a glass and took it into my room. It was terrible—I didn’t see how he could drink it. I went back out and looked in the refrigerator and found some orange soda and put it in that. It wasn’t too bad that way, and I fell asleep.
When I woke up I had a headache again. I
heard voices, and when I went out Lonnie had that lady up again. He didn’t say nothing but she said hello. I didn’t want to say hello to her, but I knew if I didn’t Lonnie would be on my case, so I did.
